About Me

I have been lecturing  in Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science in the School of Computing and Mathematics at Ulster University for over 17 years. During this time I co-ordinated, taught and assessed on a range of programmes, gaining significant experience, knowledge and understanding across a wide range of activities. I have also been involved in the validation, revalidation and accreditations of several degree programmes, as well as gaining valuable leadership experience as a Project Co-ordinator allowing me to support, manage and mentor others in relation to teaching. I use technology creatively to improve the student learning experience as appropriate to learning needs. Identifying gaps in a student’s skills base is key to improvement and I work with individuals to ensure they are appropriately guided in their learning. I also keep up-to-date with educational trends, so will always be utilising the most recent work methods.

Throughout my career I have personally supervised a variety of students and undergraduate final year projects in Mathematics, ICT and Computer Science through to successful degree completion. I have always shown respect and understanding to students and I have encouraged and supported many students with low confidence to succeed in their studies. I take great pleasure in helping students to learn and continually seek to improve their learning experience, utilising new technologies and methodologies to develop their full potential. My experience with students and their use of mobile devices has progressed from the provision of notes and tutorial questions and answers in digital form to the provision of a digital learning pen-cast resource, and the eventual creation of over one hundred digitally produced solutions.

Now I am in the process of developing an online state-of-the-art digital maths resource as well as providing curriculum development expertise to higher education institutions. My qualifications include: PhD in Information Systems and Software Engineering;Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching; BSc (Hons) in Mathematics, Statistics and Computing; and I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
